The Rumble Fish is a game developed by japanese developer Dimps, which also created very well known games like the DragonBall Z Budokai series, or co-developed Street Fighter IV and Soul Calibur VI.
This is the first game in the series to use Dimps’ SMA animation technique, which gives smooth animations by interpolating character moving parts between frames, creating a fluid, high-framerate animation.
This game was released originally for the Atomiswave arcade board, that is a Dreamcast based arcade board. We leveraged our Dreamcast expertise to create a reimplementation of the Katana dreamcast SDK to be able to compile the original game code with minor modifications.
This version was offered as a bonus for users buying The Rumble Fish 2 Deluxe Edition. It features a straight port of the arcade game, with just menus added for console adaptation.
After we released The Rumble Fish 2, we backported some of the new features to The Rumble Fish, creating The Rumble Fish + with added features:
- Pause and Main menus. Allow selecting game modes and configure game settings, creating multiplayer lobbies, watching character art, etc…
- Online Matches. Using rollback netcode for minimal latency between players, which is extremely important for fighting games. You can do both auto-matchmaking or creating a lobby with up to 3 friends and play mini-tournaments with spectator.
- Training Mode. Let players train against CPU with predefined behavior. It also allows to record your own moves and play them back in the opponent to train yourself.
- Match Recording. Allows to record your VS matches (both online and offline), and playback them later to review best moments, learn techniques, etc…
